Kano Interview

Pyroradio.com caught up with one of the Uk’s finest Kano after his sold out Uk tour to see what’s going on. Look out for Kano’s 2nd single from his top 15 album London town with the Damon Albarn assisted ‘Feel Free’

Pyroradio: How you keeping bruv? You’ve come along way since pirate days, being interviewed in a plush hotel now.

Kano: (Laughs) Na this is a one off, it feels cool though, I think the people that get to a certain place and think they’ve made it don’t usually stick arpund for that long, I always think there’s more to do and to progress, I’m cool with it.

P: How did the hook up with Damon Albarn come about?

K: I just put it out in the air and said I’d like to work with him, and see if someone could make it happen, I really liked all the Gorillaz stuff, he came back one day and said yeah he’ll be up for it, so we hooked up in the studio and just made music, it was really natural, I didn’t expect it to be like that, there was no ego, nothing like that even though he’s a massive star and he’s sold so many records but it was really easy.

P: Your album came out the same day as the two of the biggest rappers in the world - Kanye West and 50 Cent, how did it feel that your album done so well? Did you feel any pressure?

K: (Laughs) There was a time I thought this is stupid, there two of the biggest artists as you said, but that directs a lot of people to the shops and if I get good racking they should see mine blah blah, I think it worked, it is what it is, people that are gonna like me are gonna buy my record, every week is hard, there’s always competition, it was alright though.

P: I know you’ve been touring a lot lately, what’s your favorite place to perform?

K: I like Glasgow, on this tour to be fair, the best places were Cambridge and Liverpool, I always like Liverpool, Manchester I didn’t get to do it this time though, but I always like Manchester. Glasgow was live, there mad up there.

P: For your London show a lot of your peers (Ghetto, Wiley, Skepta….) came out to support how did that feel?

K: I didn’t know, I didn’t even realize until after, I didn’t even know Ghetto was there, just before Ghetto Kid I knew, some one said Ghetto’s here so I was like come on then and we smashed it, I didn’t know everyone was there, its cool that people came and it shows there watching what your doing. I like to watch people perform, like Tinchy Stryder was on tour with me and I always liked watching him perform, I think it’s important to do that

P: How do you think the grime scenes progressing?

K: There’s stuff still coming which is always healthy, there’s a lot of youngsters that wanna get involved, it’s come a little way since when I was on pirate radio, Tinchy’s doing well, I’m gonna do some work with him on his next thing, there’s always room for improvement, it could be much bigger, it’s been along time since it was at the top of the charts, like So Solid or whatever but it’s getting there.

P: I know Ghetto’s your boy so who’s your Top 3 Selected?

K: My Top 3 Selected, I’m number one, I’m not being cocky, I really am(laughs), nah nah, I like ghetto, I like Tinchy, D Double E, I respect him so much I used to listen to him when I was young, my first lyrics were his lyrics I used to spit in my bedroom, I only knew his lyrics, we were in a crew waaaaay back in the day, M.A.D crew with me, him Monkey and Ali I used to listen to the tapes back in the day over and over, I wanted to spit like him back in the day. Mighty Mo was another old time favorite, then Wiley I have to say Wiley cos he gave the scene so much, not so much in musical style, lyrically after Wiley people started copying Wiley, he’s the reason so many people spit like how they do to tell the truth.

P: I heard of a little controversy on his Myspace where he had a title saying his upcoming album is better than yours already?

K: He’s always talking, but he still has to come to my shows and see how it’s done (laughs). But to be fair everyone should feel there the best, its all about competition, like L’il Wayne says he’s the best rapper alive, but I don’t think he is or if he really believes he is or if Jay Z believes he’s the best it’s how it’s supposed to be.

P: What’s 2008 got in store for you?

K: Obviously another single from the album, I’m gonna start another Uk tour and a European tour, I’m gonna finish of another Mixtape as well, I’m gonna finish that off. Just look out for Feel Free, look out for the video, the video is big. I’m actually nearly finished the mixtape, working with Mikey J, I might get Tinchy involved as well.
