Doom Man and Harvey - UK Hip Hop

Doom Man and Harvey claim to have the UK Hip Hop Game on Lock

The Music industry is set to turn waves as it welcomes Doom-Man.  A talented underground rapper from Harrow is collaborating and featuring with ex So Solid Crew member, Harvey on his new album, set to release in 2008 via record label Universal Music Group

Doom`s own album sinisterly entitled `Doom`s Day` will also follow shortly after. As the pair team up the UK hip-hop scene is sure to be infused with energy and innovation as the dynamic duo plan to take the industry by storm.

The idea to work together came about when the artists met at recording studio, "Harvey liked my stuff and wanted me to work with him. I have a lot of respect for him, his music and his achievements and couldn’t turn down the opportunity," said Doom.

Real name Gino Morgan is of Jamaican origin and raised as a Christian. He is lyrically gifted and a unique storyteller with great delivery, energy, character, humour, and charisma. Aged 29 his credibility is evident as he started his rap career ten years earlier; having improved and accomplished a lot since then.

The inspiration for his name came from the comic publishers, `Marvel` and a character called Dr Doom. In 2000 Doom-Man created a group called "Da Marvel" with members in his "camp" named after superheroes. The name is well chosen as it reflects his style of rap- dark, sinister, and serious sounding. `Dr` was replaced for `Man` as it was similar to artists` `Red Man` and `Method Man` both highly rated influences for Doom.

Doom strives to be a perfectionist and has never lacked motivation, working hard over the years, "I do it out of the love for music and that`s what has kept me going for so long," he says.

In a career that spans over a decade he has had the opportunity to support acts such as rap pioneers De La Soul. He has also made four music videos, filming one in Mauritius and most recently a video with Harvey entitled `We Ride`. The pair toured the UK, with gigs held in Chester, Swansea, Eastbourne, Skegness, Luton, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Leicester and Derby.

Doom has also experienced touring all over the world mainly in Europe, "I got to go out to Ibiza with Harvey and perform in front of 2,000 heads and to Dubai where Neyo was headlining."

One of his most memorable moments from touring was one of his first gigs, "Supporting Kila Kela at Wembley Arena was amazing. There were around 8,000 heads, I was very nervous before coming on but as soon as I went on I forgot about the butterflies and tore the mic!" For an underground rapper who is unsigned these are very rare accomplishments.

Artistic integrity and authenticity are traits that the Doom-Man does not lack - as many others in the Hip-Hop world do- and is always referring to the `movement` of hip-hop in his music. Doom sincerely has an understanding, appreciation and respect for the roots of hip hop.

As with every artist, Doom has had his fair share of setbacks and recently left his record label `No Apologies`, "It was difficult finding out that people in your label aren`t trustworthy. That was a very hard time for me, and only happened this year," he said.

Strangely Doom has found international success that doesn`t match his level of achievement back in the UK. His music has been well received in Europe, selling 35,000 copies of his first mix tape called `Until that Day Vol.1` and packing out venues, with dedicated fans from Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Poland, Prague, and even Slovakia.

"They love pure Hip-Hop out there, and they prefer the UK artists because we`re actually going out there to perform, whereas in the UK, rap is more saturated with genres and has more of a diverse audience, so it`s a harder market to break." Recognition in the UK is difficult to attain, however, his new partnership with Harvey is definitely a step in the right direction, with both parties looking to benefit from each other creatively.

The Darksider as he often calls himself, has a vast spectrum of lyrics, he makes a beat his own and wraps his lyrics tightly around it to create a unique `Brit-Hop` sound. Doom has an originality about him which is hard to take away, he can be compared to the likes of Akala and Kano. In their use of complex rhyming structures, innovative story-telling, substance in lyrical content and depth bound together with a `poetic essence` rare to find amongst artists today.

Doom-Man prides himself on his work with different sounds and styles. He believes true hip-hop artists should integrate and break boundaries between genres, "I am Hip-hop, however I have experimented with grime, reggae, R&B and drum & base and I am also into soul, jazz, garage, funky house and classical. Nowadays music has broadened and so has its audience it has evolved, so I think it`s essential to be versatile."

The comic character theme has always allowed Doom to be more creative and animated in his lyrics and this may have also had an affect upon Harvey who in their collaborative track, `We Ride` compares the blue neon`s under his car to that of a light saber. Harvey and Doom go on to announce that they have the game on ‘lock’ referring to the rap game and do so with ingenious, humour and imagination. The two are set to be on "fiyaah!" -as Harvey would say- for the future.

Harvey and Doom are united through artistic purpose and their love for hip-hop. Ensuring that the bar of standards` are raised and that a rich British Hip-hop scene is present and established, ready for the future generations, as Doom would say "to get on with the movement ."

Doom offers a message to Pyroradio in his dark, murky, voice saying, "It`s time for the UK artists like Harvey and I to set the platform and to show the world what British Hip-Hop is about. Keep buying and supporting good music, and come to see the Darksider when he is in your town. Bless!"
