Martin Ksohoh RMC Interview
Martin Ksohoh is one of the most innovative fashion designers to emerge from Hong Kong and his denim collections have been celebrated by a long list of high profile stars and fashionistas alike including the likes of Jay Z, Nick Cannon, Lebron James, Jamie Foxx, Chris Brown and from the UK Dizzee Rascal, SAS and Darren Bent. The brand concept was born of Japanese influence, constructed of specially modified colored cotton, woven into selvage denim, materialized into the form of the Red Monkey Company. Pyroradio.com caught up with Martin to talk about RMC.
Pyroradio: How did you first get into designing and fashion?
Martin Ksohoh: I start to design in Japanese company over ten year ago. Until 2002, I start to design RMC jeans, after then 2005 start Yoropiko.
Pyroradio: What made you start RMC?
Martin Ksohoh: I’m enthusiastic about denim; I use to wear jeans all the time. Jeans were worn by workers in the past, and were kind of clothing for everyone. It is supposed to be simple and at one’s own pleasure. Because of this, my requirement for the quality and design is different with other people. I wanted to know if I can make a casual chic kind of jeans by adding embroidery to it, and making the jeans’ simple yet elegant". It makes me think about what I can do on the denim when I start to my own RMC.

Pyroradio: What inspires the designs for RMC, there very artistic and stand out amongst all the other brands?
Martin Ksohoh: Inspiration come form old fashion embroidery handicrafts. Their artwork can express craftsman’s handicrafts and contemplate. The embroidery exhibit the spirit of design. Such kind of embroidery, I want to use it on my denim. Denim has it own changing history combine with the long history of embroidery handicrafts, I wish I can express this style on RMC jeans. During the embroidery process, I’m not only using old fashion handicrafts but also add on new technique. Very pleased to see that different brand to copy my design, this made me amongst all the other brands.

Pyroradio: How did celebrities such as Jay Z, Dizzee Rascal, Lebron James, SAS and Jamie Foxx get involved in wearing RMC?
Martin Ksohoh: Thanks for their support to RMC; all of them are successful people and good customers. They have their own taste and living requirement. They choose our brand because something can fulfill their requirement. I believe my design has some element but other doesn’t have. Up now, lot of brand copy or counterfeit my design. But I know my customer knowing that what they want.
Pyroradio: I read that certain pieces of RMC have over 800,000 stitches. How long does it take to make or design a piece like this?
Martin Ksohoh: 800000 stitch only the figure. We focus on how to enhance the design instead of how many stitches is used. Actually, some design used over 800000 stitches. Embroidery process takes quite long time; generally, we need 8 to 10 hours for finishing one design.

Pyroradio: What can people expect form RMC in 2008?
Martin Ksohoh: This is a good question. This year collection, the whole idea will around "City of Neighborhood". I got lot of encouragement, idea and love from my neighborhoods. This is touching me so much. I want to response their caring and love to them. So that, this year, the fabric will using European selvage denim, the brand name knit on the selvage, which exhibit our quality. For design aspect, we have Original Red (OR), wave embroidery which traverses the back pocket, which is simple design but drawn people attention.
