Big Cakes Interview
Kung Fu interview with Big Cakes
Pyroradio.com: So the first one we played was ‘Rhyme Speak’ and then we played a track called ‘Straight off the Ends’
Big Cakes: Yeah, the second one was ‘Straight off the Ends’
Pyroradio.com: Cool man. So let’s – ok – let’s get into it now because like, you know, as you might have heard it’s quite a international show. People in New Zealand, Wales, all over the country – er, they might not have heard of you so just maybe introduce yourself, you know, say who you are, where you’re from, what you do
Big Cakes: Introduce myself to the world yeah? Have you got like a platform I could stand on right now? I’m messing about still. I’m messing about still. Yeah it’s Big Cakes, Mr. Kipling fam. Up in the building. You get me, my pleasure to be here, what’s happening? Kung Fu? Listeners? The world?
Pyroradio.com: So how long have you been rapping for then?
Big Cakes: Boy...Fam, I’ve been rapping for as long as I remember you know. Honestly, like my Dad’s a DJ yeah. Like I was born in Nigeria yeah, and my Dad’s a big DJ out there, was a big DJ out there - Mr. Manics
Pyroradio.com: What kind of music?
Big Cakes: Erm...Eighties music, like disco music, R&B and then soul and that you get me, but when – obviously I was part of the younger generation so I was part of that yo MTV raps like generation; I used to be back in Nigeria like watching cable and just – watching like, what is it? OPP, Naughty by Nature and all them sort of things you get me, and like all the records I could think of like, my Dad had them in the house you get me. I used to cut and mix in my room you get me, so I’ve always been involved in it. Parties, I’ll grab the mic, Adlib, Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff ‘Summertime’, you get me. Open up the party and that, do you know what I mean – so, true stories I’ve always had music like around me you get me but – doing my thing, rapping as Big Cakes has like – how can I say like, we been doing this for like – how long have we been doing this for, about...Nah, nah, we been doing this for more than that. It’s been about – yeah Stuff Music has been doing this for about four, five years now
Pyroradio.com: Ok tell us a little bit about Stuff Music then, what’s that?
Big Cakes: Stuff Music is the unit I move with you get me. These are my bredrins, do you see what I’m saying? Like minded people who all thought like, you know what, man is serious and we got something good to put out so let’s put all our resources together and see what happens
Pyroradio.com: And is it various artists, producers, rappers?
Big Cakes: Erm, so far I’m the only – I’ve been the only main artist on Stuff Music. We came from a group of artists Zone Two but, like I was the only artist Stuff Music like – who chose to take it very seriously, do you see what I’m saying so me and the man dem just thought like, see what I’m saying like, let them push me. But now we’re kind of like, trying to, you know expand, you know, so we’re trying to look at other people and like hopefully we should be dealing with a couple new people but so far it’s just me still
Pyroradio.com: Do you live in zone two?
Big Cakes: Zone two? Nah, nah, nah. Right now I don’t live in zone two right now still
Pyroradio.com: I was just wondering where the name came from
Big Cakes: Where the – yeah it was something along them lines, it was something along them lines, but you know how the youngers are still. Yeah we had a name for – we had a name for everything back in them days still so Zone Two was the one we chose
Pyroradio.com: Oh ok. You sound like a - old head on these shoulders man. You don’t look too old
Big Cakes: Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah like, we’re getting old, we’re getting old you get me. We’re getting old but we’re still young you know. It’s not like, it’s not like Jay-Z or nothing, like Young Hov and that you get me but we’re still young. Yeah we’re still early twenties you know
Pyroradio.com: Alright, so tell us about some of the stuff you’ve put out, some of the stuff you’ve got coming out.
Big Cakes: Erm – right now I’ll tell you what I’m dealing with fam, I’ve just put out my album. It’s called S.K.I.M for anyone who don’t know, that’s Still Keepin It Movin. That’s out in – you like that yeah – the EP was actually called Keepin It Movin and so we thought – you know it was only right we completed because it was a good response from like our local area you see what I’m saying, so we put that out as a full album and that’s called Still Keepin It Movin. That’s out in all good record shops, downloads, erm internet sites you see what I’m saying, so – iTunes and that, so if – HMV and that. My bredrins just punching in the words on cue to me you get me so
Pyroradio.com: Give me the MySpace. What’s the MySpace?
Big Cakes: Erm the MySpace is dot com forward slash Big Cakes. B-I-G-C-A-K-E-S. So hit me, hit me
Pyroradio.com: That’s nice and easy. I wanna know, as a child did you like cake?
Big Cakes: Yeah I liked cake still but that’s – that’s not really what – where exactly it came from still yeah but I liked cake still you get me. I just – you have to do your research. You have to go back to about 96/7 when I got the name Cakes you see what I’m saying and see what Cakes stood for on the roads you get me. And obviously as we get older and we get bigger, I find my sticker big on it so it’s like – It’s Big Cake
Pyroradio.com: Oh ok. So like – you know, Victoria Sponge, chocolate cake that sort of stuff. (Laughter) Cool, so I think we got some erm tracks to play from the album
Big Cakes: Yeah man
Pyroradio.com: Tell us a little bit about the album, is it just you on there? Erm, is it featuring any special guests?
Big Cakes: On the album fam it’s really just me you know. Seriously because I was at a time where I felt like I had so much to say still. Do you see what I’m saying? I had tracks sitting there but I’ve got erm – I feature Ice Kid. I don’t know if anyone’s heard about Ice Kid from Double Trouble. And I have to say, Ice Kid
Overlap - Pyroradio.com: Young guy?
Big Cakes: Yeah young guy. Younger still, he’s a really talented young man still, you see what I’s saying? Obviously like the music is two different – Ice Kid’s more on a grime thing still
Pyroradio.com: He was on that Stylo G track
Big Cakes: Yeah, yeah he was on the Stylo G track you get me. Obviously he’s on the grime thing still but when we linked up in the studio, we knew we had to make it happen still
Pyroradio.com: Cool. Alright man. So we’re going to get into some of the music now I think yeah. And erm, from the er – from the album. The album is called Still Keepin It Movin. S.K.I.M.
Big Cakes: S.K.I.M. That’s Still Keepin It Movin fam
Pyroradio.com: Like you said, it’s available in all good record shops, iTunes, HMV, all that good stuff
Big Cakes: All that good stuff
Pyroradio.com: Can you get it on the MySpace – off MySpace?
Big Cakes: Yeah man. Holla at me on the MySpace. I’ll send you an autographed copy you get me
Pyroradio.com: Alright man, so we’re going to play a track off the album if you want to introduce it and er – yeah man
