In the mid 90’s, London gave birth to a new sound that immediately resonated with the rest of the UK. The sound was organically developed when underground producers and MCs took elements of funky house, US garage (deep soulful/gospel house) and jungle and fused the three together with a distinctive 2-step backdrop. This sound was UK Garage.
Such was the success of UK Garage that a plethora of club nights sprang up all around London. Within a few years, hugely attended club nights were popping up all over the UK. Meanwhile the scene’s key players were hosting regular residencies in Ibiza – the island usually associated with electronic and chillout music - and had literally taken over the Cypriot island of Ayia Napa.
Suddenly UK Garage had blown up everywhere!
Pirate radio stations such as De Ja Vu, Rinse FM, and Freeze FM contributed to hits such as ‘Flowers’ by Sweet Female Attitude, ‘Never Gonna Let You Go’ by Tina Moore and ‘Sweet Like Chocolate’ by Shanks & Bigfoot. Radio 1 even offered darling DJ’s of the scene The Dreem Team (Spoony & Mikee B) their own show. Craig David (responsible for vocals on the anthem ‘Re-Rewind’ by The Artful Dodger) became a huge success.
With the return of Garage hitting the streets, and UK clubs and airwaves championing Bassline, there has been a resurgence of some of the most well loved tracks and artists from the dominant Garage era of the 90s and early 00s. Leading UK dance label, Ministry Of Sound, responsible for embracing the scene at the time celebrate the influence of the genre by releasing ‘Garage Classics’ a triple CD compilation mixed by The Wideboys.
The platinum selling producers Eddie Craig and Jim Sullivan are one of the UK’s most ‘in demand’ remixers of the moment having recently re-worked 3 hits in current top 40 by Rhianna, Sugababes and erm, Westlife! In 2000 they won the UK Garage Awards accolade of ‘Best Newcomer’. They also enjoyed major commercial success with last year’s ‘Maximum Bass’ compilation in addition to consistent underground acclaim from 10 years of DJing on the scene.
The first 2 CD’s in this amazing package boast a collection of all the best old skool 2-step UK Garage tracks of all time from acts such as DJ Luck & MC Neat, Sweet FA, Doolally and Tina Moore.
